Forums/Newsgroups

The purpose of a Forum of Newsgroup, is basically to share and find out new information. People can post about their experiences and others can learn new things.

You usually need to sign up to a Forum by submitting an e-mail, password, username etc. Some Forums may ask for donations or other things depending on the type of Forum.

Search engines

Search engines use a software called spiders, which go around the internet looking for documents and their Web address.
The documents and Web addresses are collected and sent to the search engine's indexing software.
The indexing software then takes info from the documents, storing it in a database.
When you then perform a search by entering keywords, the database searches for documents that match. The search engine then assembles a web page that lists the results in hypertext.

Google
Yahoo
Ask Jeeves

My favourite is definitely Google, always has been always will be.

Other search engines;
* Altavista
* Baidu
* Bing
* Cuil
* Duck Duck Go
* Kosmix
* Sogou
* Yodao
* Yandex
* Yebol

Domain names

The domain name is the unique name that identifies an Internet site. The Internet is made up of millions of computers and networks, all with their own domain name or unique address. Domain names always have two or more parts separated by dots. A given server may have more than one domain name, but a given Domain name points to only one server.

.gov
- Reserved for government agencies
.net - For networks, usually reserved for organizations such as Internet service providers
.org - For non-commercial organizations
.com - For businesses and commercial enterprises, most companies use this extension.

Australia = .au
Italy = .it
Lebanon = .lb

URL or Web address

A URL indicates where the web page is stored on the Internet. URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator, It is also known as a Web site address.

http
- Short for Hypertext Transfer Protocol, this indicates a Web document or directory.

www - This indicates a page on the World Wide Web.

Kangan.edu.au - The domain name.

Browsers

A web browser is the software program used to access the World Wide Web. A browser retrieves data from web servers, assembles it, then displays it as a web page.

I have used Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

I prefer to use Mozilla Firefox because It works much faster than Microsoft Internet Explorer, and I find it a little more user friendly.

I use the Bookmark feature quite a bit, to store my favourite web pages.

Internet Overview

Connecting to the Internet?
Your computer must be connected to a modem, to translate into a format that can travel to your local Broadband provider. Over telephone, cable or other types of lines. Your broadband provider has multiple high speed connections that connect it to the internet itself.

How the web works?

Basically, our web pages live on other computers called servers around the world, there are millions of them. When we type in a web site into our browser, It searches for the right server and comes back to us via little packets of codes, and our web browser translates these codes into words, photos, music, videos and links.

How email works ?

Every kind of email is converted to text, even if it has attachments. When you click the send button, the domain name is stripped off 'yahoo.com' and that email server is contacted. your email is added to the appropriate text file. When someone goes to check email, the email program copies the file and the server file is cleared.

How search engines work ?
A search engines identifies a word your searching and tries to link you to web pages that has the words shown. The top link would usually be the best place to get the resources your looking for. Usually there are too many results, so you can add a - plus the word to eliminate the word that has the same meaning to the word your after. for example Mullet can be a fish or a hairstyle. By being specific and using words and symbols that removes useless information you can find exactly what you need.

How newsgroups and forums work?
A newsgroup or forum is like an online community bulletin board. You can post, reply or just read messages. When you send a message, the news server posts it for everyone to read. Other people of the newsgroup or forum can now read and respond to your message.

How streaming media works?
When you click on a media video, your web browser requests the video from a media server on the internet. The server then responds and sends a continuous stream of data. Your computer then opens a media player, and the streaming data is stored in a buffer. Once enough data has been received , the video begins to play.

Why I use the Interenet.

Hi, I'm Adam and I use the internet for alot of different things. I mainly use it to keep in contact with friends and family and to research things.
I keep up to date with new games for the xbox 360 and ps3. Finding out release dates and reviews on certain titles. http://www.gamespot.com/ and http://www.gametrailers.com/ are my favourite sites for games.

I use the internet to gather information about anything and everything, for assignments or/and projects or just for general knowledge. http://www.wikipedia.com/

I use it to hear the latest music and new movie trailers, http://www.youtube.com/ is the best for it.

I use it to download movies from torrent sites and songs from different music blog sites. http://disturbedbeats.blogspot.com/
